Backgrounds decide skill-tree access. Every recruited unit is generated with one background trait, and that background sets which main and sub skill trees the unit may pick from. Backgrounds also nudge the unit's starting talent rolls. This page lists all 40 backgrounds; the same trait-to-tree data is shown as a matrix on the Skill Trees page.
